    Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, transitory though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? If the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness!     Today the Lord is opening up these verses in 2 Corinthians 3. When Paul wrote this, he was obviously speaking of the Jewish religion, including all of its laws and the Ten Commandments, which were “engraved in letters on stone.” He was calling it a ministry of death. But just now the Lord is saying that the Jewish religion is just an example of religion in general.

    Religion does not, and indeed cannot, follow the Spirit of Christ. Instead, it takes up the model of following the letter. Even if the New Testament is read and “believed,” it is looked at as new rules to be followed. This offers no hope to the followers, of course, because they cannot follow the Law any better than the Jews did in Jesus’ time. Therefore, to the religious, the New Testament also becomes a ministry that brings death. Why is that so?

    It is because the people are not able to follow the Law. As soon as laws are given, people begin to find loopholes and ways to work around the Law. Then more laws are needed to control and cow (coerce) them into following the original laws. This process leads to totalitarianism because lawless people will not obey laws unless they are pressed into it by force.

    But, where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom! Spirit filled believers have a bent toward righteousness. In fact, they despise lawlessness because it is not from the Spirit of God. Few laws, rules, etc. are needed for those who follow the Spirit of the Lord. And there truly is freedom in this lifestyle.

    All of this is background for a look into the world of today. The Lord is showing us why He has decided to intervene. I see all the laws that worked well for years now being corrupted by the lawless: judges, district attorneys, and lawyers who have no interest in being fair or law abiding at all. Their unfair and illegal antics make the communist countries look good and fair by comparison!   • Today the Lord is saying that He desires obedience. Not obedience to words on a page. Not even obedience to a man or woman of God. He doesn't desire us to chase after Him either. Instead, He desires simple obedience like Jesus has spoken of: "I can do nothing of Myself; I only do what I see My Father doing."

    To chase after the Lord without really following the Holy Spirit is to take what the Scriptures say by making your own judgments regarding what is said in them. This is to believe you are doing His will without really knowing what His will is. It is to do good works listed in the Scriptures without the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Yes, it is spending your money giving to those in need apart from the Spirit of God in order to be nice or to appear nice to those in need by giving them food or shelter without the Spirit of God's leading.

    For example, you may believe He approves of "mission trips" to poor countries and so you "support" those who do these things, but you have never asked the Holy Spirit for guidance because you can obviously see that these things are for a good cause. You lean on Scripture verses that seem to you to indicate "giving" means anytime you release something you own to someone else for free it is a good thing. After all, Christians are supposed to be nice! However, making up our own rules about how to give leads to trouble. The account of Ananias and Sapphira bear witness to this.

    Also, consider Matthew 6:1-4 below. It speaks of giving to be seen by men, and if you do this, you will have no reward for it. Jesus said,

    "Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly."

    Therefore, even though you're giving something away to a church or a very good cause, it must be done according to the leading of the Holy Spirit. The tithe that is taught and preached about cannot please God if it is given apart from the leading of the Holy Spirit. We are not under law anymore when we are in Christ. If He leads someone to give ten percent, then they should. If not, then they shouldn't. Theologies, doctrines, pastors, the law, and even Scriptures do not lead us into all truth! If you believe what the Scriptures say then you believe that the Spirit of Truth leads us into all truth, and He convicts us of righteousness and of sin and of judgment.

    Yes, the Holy Spirit is God, and Jesus thought Him so important as to say that it was to our advantage that He (Jesus) would leave, and the Holy Spirit would come! As the Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 3, we really are servants of a new covenant, not of the LETTER but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life! (2 Corinthian 3:6 reads …who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.) Amen.
